In an ideal world, cost would not be a factor in healthcare. We'd seek out the best care we could find for our particular condition. Fortunately though, when it comes to back pain and other ailments, the best choice is often the least expensive one.
Which provider is most often effective?
In our Chiropractic Instead of Surgery article, we discussed a 2014 study that found when a surgeon or M.D. is a patient’s first point of contact, the likelihood of surgery is 42%. But when a chiropractor is a patient’s first point of contact, the likelihood of surgery is less than 2%.
And a paper in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research states: “Estimates suggest that 10-40% of lumbar spine surgery patients experience persistent post-surgical pain (PPSP). PPSP is associated with 50% greater healthcare costs, along with risks of emotional distress and impaired quality of life.”
Since chiropractic can address underlying conditions without resorting to surgery, most experts recommend seeing a chiropractor first.
Physical therapists also offer effective care for back and joint issues, but chiropractic care has again been found to be less expensive in the long run.
The unseen cost of high costs
Few people like to pay more than they need to for anything. But when it comes to healthcare, high prices can lead to people neglecting their health. KFF polling from March 2022 found two in five American adults “report that they or a family member in their household put off or postponed needed health care due to cost.”
That’s tragic. But fortunately, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that chiropractic care is a safe, effective, and cost-effective way to treat back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions.
